We have a second edition of the climbing guide for mainland Portugal, written by Carlos “Cuca” Simes and featuring photographs by Ricardo “Macau” Alves.

According to Cuca, his main objectives with this guide were “to document the climbing community and climbing areas in Portugal and to represent them internationally in three different versions/languages: Portuguese, English, and German.”

This guide is a compilation that brings to light almost all the “hidden” rock climbing potential in Portugal. It represents a massive update to all the information written, researched, and developed over the last decade.

From this small nation by the sea comes an extensive list of climbing routes to be enjoyed along more than 700 km of stunning coastline and 200 km of unique inland landscapes.

With a climbing history dating back to the 1950s, the hundreds of Portuguese routes have remained somewhat “hidden”—much to the delight of lucky locals and occasional visitors—yet they are in no way inferior in quality to the routes found in neighboring Spain or other international destinations.

On the contrary, given the country’s compact size and peripheral location, these diverse and uncrowded routes are a true gem. They offer more than enough reason to plan a climbing trip, whether for a short visit, an extended stay, or a road trip!
